Kruger Calls on Province to Reveal True Cost of Massey Tunnel Replacement

Delta Councillor Dylan Kruger says the provincial government must immediately disclose the true cost of the Massey Tunnel replacement following the federal government’s announcement of a fixed funding commitment.

“The federal government has committed to covering one third of eligible project costs, up to a maximum of $3 billion,” said Kruger. “Simple math suggests a project price tag of at least $9 billion, which is more than double the province’s outdated $4.15‑billion estimate. So, what is the real number? The province keeps peddling a figure no one believes and residents deserve to know how much the dithering has cost them in time and money.”

Kruger said the federal announcement validates concerns raised for months about escalating costs and a lack of transparency. British Columbia had reportedly sought $4 billion in federal funding but ultimately secured a commitment of up to $3 billion.

“For years, British Columbians have been told this project was on track. Instead, we’ve seen delays, a cancelled procurement process, a complete restart and now a funding announcement that points to a dramatically higher price tag than the public has been told,” said Kruger. “This has been a botched project that seemingly can’t get off the drawing board.”

“The provincial government needs to come clean. What is the actual cost of this project? How much will provincial taxpayers be responsible for? And why has the public been kept in the dark about the financial realities of this project?”

Kruger reiterated his call for an independent third‑party review into the management of the project. “The Massey Tunnel replacement has become one of the biggest infrastructure failures in British Columbia’s history,” he said. “Before billions more are committed, there must be full transparency and accountability on how we got here and what this project will ultimately cost.”

Added Kruger: “The bottom line is simple. Delta residents and taxpayers across British Columbia deserve nothing less than knowing all the facts about how this project has gotten so far off track.”
